This was a tough one. UNC had plenty of candidates for tournament MVP. Megan Ward played amazing in goal. Sammy Jo Tracy and Kelly Devlin has a number of important goals to keep them in games. Aly Messinger had the game winning goal and a hat trick in the championship game to go along with two assists. In the end, the MVP went to sophomore Marie McCool.
In all reality, McCool has been the MVP for this UNC team for the entire year. Every time UNC needs a goal she seems to be the one to put the ball in the back of the net. In a year when Jenny Levy was counting on Maggie Bill, Sydney Holman and freshman Olivia Ferrucci it was McCool who was left to shoulder the load with the aforementioned athletes going down with injuries.
McCool has not only been the leading scorer for the Tar Heels but she has been extremely important in the center circle. While she does not lead the team in draw controls she has definitely influenced more than her fair share of possessions by being in the midfield. The crazy thing is that she is only going to get better. Can you imagine Maggie Bill and Marie McCool on the field together? Next year! Let’s just make sure she doesn’t use an illegal stick.
