Maryland Wins the 2017 National Championship

Congratulations to the 2017 Maryland Terrapins who defeated Boston College to win the women’s lacrosse national championship. The Terps beat UNC 13-10 in College Park on Saturday, February 25th, 2017. Many expected to see a rematch of the Tar Heels and Terps in the championship game but UNC was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by Navy in the Elite 8.

Navy Stuns UNC Lacrosse to Advance to Final Four

In a game that almost everyone predicted UNC to win, us included, Navy shocked the women’s lacrosse world by dominating the last 10 minutes of the Elite 8 game to take out the defending champs on their home field. It was the last game in the history of the current Fetzer Field and it will forever be remembered as one of the largest upsets in UNC women’s lacrosse history.

Navy Coach Cindy Timchal Brings Experience, Championships

For those that are unaware, the current Navy women’s lacrosse coach, Cindy Timchal, was at the University of Maryland when they won 8 national championships; 7 consecutive. They also reeled off 55 straight wins which is a record that will likely stand for a very long time. Coach Timchal left Maryland in 2007 to take of the Navy job.

Tar Heels Crush UVA in Their First Game of the 2017 NCAA Tournament

It is safe to say UVA was not having a good season in 2017, but no one expected to see a running clock midway through the second half in the second round NCAA Tournament game in Chapel Hill on Sunday, May 14th, 2017. The Tar Heels came out on fire with both Carly Reed and Marie McCool scoring five goals in the first half.

2016 Tournament Matchup Likely UNC vs Duke

The 2016 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament is out and UNC the #3 seed overall. Many would argue they deserved the #2 seed after winning the ACC regular season and tournament championships but that is another article for another time. With the #3 seed, UNC will host the first two weekends of NCAA Tournament.

Kelly Cross Scores with 0.2 Seconds Left in ACC Tournament Championship

You couldn’t have scripted it any better. With time running out Kayla Treanor wildly threw a pass to the middle of the field where all Kelly Cross used all her 5’11” frame to grab the ball and get it past Megan Ward to tie up the 2016 ACC Tournament Championship Game. Aly Messinger’s Game Winning Goal Gives UNC ACC Tournament Championship

Wow! What a game. The emotional roller coaster of the 2016 ACC Tournament Championship game ended with Aly Messinger sprinting across the crease and bouncing one into the back of the net to give UNC their first ACC Tournament Championship since 2002 and just their second ever. It was one of the most improbable victories in recent history as the Tar Heels started the overtime down two players with both Marie McCool and Alex Moore getting yellow cards before the end of regulation.

Tar Heel Defense Spurs Comeback Victory Over Duke

The UNC vs Duke rivalry remains heated in every single sport. After demolishing the Blue Devils in the regular season, the Tar Heels needed a comeback victory in the ACC Tournament to advance to the championship game. Things looked bleak as the Blue Devils were up 6-4 with less than 15 minutes to play. Fortunately, the Tar Heels were not going easy into the Blacksburg, Virginia night.

Virginia Tech is No Test for the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament

The 2016 ACC Tournament started off just the way the Tar Heels wanted it to – in dominating fashion. The Heels jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in Blacksburg. With the 2016 ACC Tournament being held at Virginia Tech some felt as if the Hokies could give the Tar Heels a challenge on their home turf but that was not the case. When all was said and done the Tar Heels beat the Hokies 19-6.
