The UNC vs Duke rivalry remains heated in every single sport. After demolishing the Blue Devils in the regular season, the Tar Heels needed a comeback victory in the ACC Tournament to advance to the championship game. Things looked bleak as the Blue Devils were up 6-4 with less than 15 minutes to play. Fortunately, the Tar Heels were not going easy into the Blacksburg, Virginia night.
Scoring goals is not an issue for the UNC Tar Heels women’s lacrosse team. Unless they are playing Duke. For some reason, the Duke Blue Devils have been able to slow down the Tar Heel attack. While the Tar Heels have won six of the last seven and 12 of the last 15 meetings against Duke, it seems to always be the case that Duke keeps these games low scoring. Who will forget the end to the 2014 regular season in which Duke beat the Tar Heels in Kenan Stadium. That is one we want to forget.
In the 2016 ACC Tournament things were looking very similar until Marie McCool took the game into her own hands. She was a menace to Duke as she gobbled up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. The UNC defense was able to keep Duke scoreless for the last 18 minutes of the game.
Goals by McCool, Tracy and Devlin finished the game with the Tar Heels coming out on top 7-6. The Tar Heels will face Syracuse in a rematch of the 2015 ACC Tournament Championship in which Syracuse beat the Heels. I think it is safe to say that the ACC Championship game will not be nearly as low scoring as this game.
