2016 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year – Jenny Levy

For the first time since 2010, UNC women’s lacrosse head coach Jenny Levy was named ACC women’s lacrosse coach of the year. This should come as no surprise to anyone that follows women’s lacrosse. The Tar Heels were undefeated in regular season play capturing the ACC regular season title before heading into the ACC Tournament in Blacksburg, Virginia. In Blacksburg, the hobbled Tar Heels found a way to get through the toughest conference in America to claim the crown.

2016 Tournament Matchup Likely UNC vs Duke

The 2016 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament is out and UNC the #3 seed overall. Many would argue they deserved the #2 seed after winning the ACC regular season and tournament championships but that is another article for another time. With the #3 seed, UNC will host the first two weekends of NCAA Tournament.

Marie McCool Named 2016 ACC Tournament MVP

This was a tough one. UNC had plenty of candidates for tournament MVP. Megan Ward played amazing in goal. Sammy Jo Tracy and Kelly Devlin has a number of important goals to keep them in games. Aly Messinger had the game winning goal and a hat trick in the championship game to go along with two assists. In the end, the MVP went to sophomore Marie McCool.

Was Marie McCool’s Stick Illegal?

Marie and Jenny Levy sure didn’t think so. All UNC fans were hoping it was not, but the referees thought differently. It is interesting that it took so long for the refs to figure this out. One would imagine it is as simply as a stick check and on with the game. What would have happened if Sammy Jo Tracy, Mallory Frysinger or Molly Hendrick would have won the draw? Would the refs have deemed their stick illegal?

Kelly Cross Scores with 0.2 Seconds Left in ACC Tournament Championship

You couldn’t have scripted it any better. With time running out Kayla Treanor wildly threw a pass to the middle of the field where all Kelly Cross used all her 5’11” frame to grab the ball and get it past Megan Ward to tie up the 2016 ACC Tournament Championship Game. Aly Messinger’s Game Winning Goal Gives UNC ACC Tournament Championship

Wow! What a game. The emotional roller coaster of the 2016 ACC Tournament Championship game ended with Aly Messinger sprinting across the crease and bouncing one into the back of the net to give UNC their first ACC Tournament Championship since 2002 and just their second ever. It was one of the most improbable victories in recent history as the Tar Heels started the overtime down two players with both Marie McCool and Alex Moore getting yellow cards before the end of regulation.
