The 2016 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament is out and UNC the #3 seed overall. Many would argue they deserved the #2 seed after winning the ACC regular season and tournament championships but that is another article for another time. With the #3 seed, UNC will host the first two weekends of NCAA Tournament.

The first game of the tournament will feature the Duke Blue Devils vs the Loyola Greyhounds. Duke is the higher seed and is expected to win this game as they have faced much stiffer competition throughout the 2016 season. That said, Loyola did beat UVA 7-6 on March 9th, 2016. Duke beat UVA 11-8 on March 26th.

Duke heads into the NCAA Tournament playing very well. They have lost three of their last four but two of those losses were to UNC. The Tar Heels had to slip past Duke 7-6 to go on to play in the ACC Championship Tournament game in Blacksburg last weekend. Duke also played #6 national seed Notre Dame to a one goal overtime loss in the last week of the regular seed. It is safe to say Duke has been battle tested.

If Duke gets past Loyola it will be a very interesting matchup for the Tar Heels. In most first round matchups the Tar Heels are playing a team they know they can beat. In fact, the first game of the tournament over the last few years has been decided in the first half. Do not look for that to be the case at Fetzer Field on Sunday if the Tar Heels are taking on the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils take on the Greyhounds Friday at 5:00 pm at Fetzer Field if you would like to get a preview of the team UNC will play on Sunday at 1:00 pm at Fetzer Field.
